Why this farm?

"We are reclaiming this land to grow healthy food to meet the needs of local communities. We envision a future of food sovereignty, in which our East Bay communities make use of available land - occupying  it where necessary - for sustainable agriculture to meet local needs.  The Gill Tract is very special:

  • 7 of the 13 remaining acres are the last Class One soil left in the urbanized East Bay. Ninety percent of the original 104 acres have been paved over and developed, irreverisibly contaminating the land.

  • Students, professors, and local residents have fought for decades to save this amazing land from development and to use it for sustainable agriculture.

  • UCB capital projects, the university's development arm and the current administrators of this land, have slated it for rezoning and redevelopment in 2013. Planned developments include a Whole Foods supermarket, expensive senior housing, and other commercial development.

  • Current research on a portion of the land focuses primarily on corn genetics, regrettably paying no tribute to the decades of research benefitting sustianable agriculture that came before it (funding for this type of research has faced severe cuts over the last 20 years."

 

What if the 99% had a clean financial slate? This is a buyout of the people by the people.

"Strike Debt came from a coalition of Occupy groups looking to build popular resistance to the all forms of debt imposed on us by the banks. Debt keeps us isolated, ashamed, and afraid. We are a building a movement to challenge this system while creating alternatives and supporting each other. We want an economy where our debts are to our friends, families, and communities -- and not to the 1%. You are not a loan."
